IHELA’s Board of Directors consists of five members. Each Director is appointed by the Governor and subject to confirmation by the Iowa Senate. Directors must be residents of Iowa and no more than three may be members of the same political party or gender. Board appointments are made for six-year terms. In addition to the five members appointed by the Governor, the State Treasurer serves as an ex-officio member of the Board.

John V. Hartung

Dr. Hartung is a resident of Indianola, Iowa. Dr. Hartung is the Retired President of the Iowa Association of Independent Colleges and Universities. His current term expires April 30, 2027.

Beverly Wharton

Ms. Wharton is a resident of Sioux City, Iowa. Ms. Wharton is the retired president of Briar Cliff University in Sioux City. Her current term expires April 30, 2026.

Annette Shaw

Ms. Shaw is a resident of Polk City, Iowa.  Ms. Shaw is the retired Institutional Investment Executive for  BTC Capital Management in Des Moines, Iowa.  Her current term expires April 30, 2024.

Gary Steinke

Mr. Steinke is a resident of Urbandale, Iowa. Mr. Steinke is President of the Iowa Association of Independent Colleges and Universities. His current term expires April 30, 2023.

Randy Fehr

Mr. Fehr is a resident of Washington, Iowa. Mr. Fehr is the retired Vice President of Finance of Buena Vista University. His current term expires April 30, 2028.
